There are so many onions that we like. Growing green onions in a pot or in a garden is simple enough that it is one of the first activities that most children grow. Their onion or garlic flavor is sweet enough that you can eat them in their purest form, but they are also a phenomenal filling for baked potatoes or other dishes.

Not only the leaves are edible, but also the flowers. Looking for some color to add to your salads? Green onion flowers are ideal for this purpose!

But did I mention how easy it is to grow them? Because in fact, these are some of the best plants you can grow for a new gardener in your life. They grow easily from seed, look great in the garden and are worth the time and effort spent.

All about the onion

First, let’s talk about what we call green onions. Allium schoenoprasum is the most common botanical name for this tubular delicacy. It is widely used worldwide in the wild. In fact, this is the only Alliumart that has appeared in both the Old and the New World!

Green onions are a valuable asset for pollinators and bloom with round inflorescences of pinkish-purple flowers on the tops of their peduncles (pedicels). Each flower has six long petals forming a star shape, and they gather in groups of 10-30 flowers in an inflorescence. These flowers produce tons of nectar for pollinating insects, which is enough to make them one of the top ten nectar producers in the UK.

The portion that we know best is very similar to green onions, but in miniature. The leaves are long, cylindrical and hollow, formed in layers from the basal bulb. Several plants can be tightly grouped, creating a carpet of this herbaceous plant.

But the landscapes and flowers that form at their ends are also edible. The use of green onions in cooking dates back 5,000 years. The Romans believed that they had medicinal properties, and Gypsies or gypsies considered them useful for divination. Their common names ranged from “green onion” or “onion onion” to “leek” with many other variations.

Another species, Allium tuberosum, is more commonly called “garlic onion” or “Chinese onion”. This species is much more similar to grass than its shallot counterparts, and produces white inflorescences of flowers on flat leaves with a slight garlic flavor. Like Allium schoenoprasum, Allium tuberosum grows from a bulb, but it is easier to propagate on its own.

When to plant

Green onions are a perennial plant of the cool season, which means that they often rest during the summer months. Plant either in early spring to give them time to mature before thermal dormancy, or in autumn so that they can grow well in winter. For germination, you need a soil temperature of 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Where to plant

Is the green onion perennial? Yes, and therefore you should plan your investments accordingly. They will return year after year to the same place.

Install a special bed for green onions where they can grow, or think about growing green onions in pots. On cooler days, full sun conditions are better, but you can survive in partial shade if you get at least 6 hours of sunlight. This makes it an ideal plant to grow in some of these less optimal parts of the garden.

How to plant green onions

Growing green onions is easy, but before you can grow them, you have to grow them. For good germination, sow them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Then you can plant green onions as soon as all peril of freezing disappears.

But now that we’ve talked about planting green onions, it’s also important to know how to grow them to maturity. Here’s a quick overview of everything you need to keep your green onion plants happy!

Water and humidity

The best time of day for watering green onions is in the morning. This gives enough time for the long leaves to dry and excess water to enter the soil. You can choose soaking hoses at the base if you want, and it’s usually a good choice.

Green onions are moderately resistant to drought, but prefer regular uniform humidity. If you get water regularly, the plants can grow bigger and ensure re-harvesting. Try to keep the soil moist, but not dirty. Using mulch around plants can slow the evaporation of moisture from the soil.

Field

The soil for your green onions should be moist as indicated above, but it should also be rich and well-drained. Sandy soil can provide good drainage, but must be heavily supplemented with compost to provide nutrients and retain moisture.

Before planting, it is recommended to treat with a good compost material, rich in 6-8 inches, when planting on a bed. In containers, use a high-quality soil mixture enriched with a large amount of composted cow or horse manure.

Fertilizer

A balanced granular fertilizer, such as the NPK 3-3-3 formula, can be applied every 2-4 weeks throughout the growing season. This provides enough food for your plants. Lightly apply fertilizer to the soil around the base of the plants and water well.

It is also possible to use manure or composted plant material as fertilizer, provided that it is well seasoned. This provides a little less food for your plants, but improves the condition of the soil as a whole.
