A banana with ice cream? It sounds too delicious to be true. But the Javanese blue banana, also called an ice banana, is an awesome fruit. Banana ice cream is initially blue, while it is on the plant, but when ripe it acquires a creamy yellow color. And did I mention that it looks like vanilla ice cream?

Slightly sticky compared to other varieties of bananas, it is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world. Although they grow naturally in Hawaii or other tropical regions, more and more people in countries with hot climates are starting to grow their own Javanese blue bananas.

These plants are a fantastic addition to any vegetable garden, but they are pretty good, even if you just want to create a tropical paradise in your garden. The flower is awesome and the fact that you get fresh fruit from it is the best. So let’s talk about the banana ice cream factory and how to take care of it!

All about Blue Banana Java

All edible bananas are hybrids of two species: Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. They are classified into groups designated by Musa acuminata or M. balbisiana with a or B. The Three letters are used to indicate the number of representatives of each species present in the hybrid.

Blue Java bananas are part of the ABB Group. They take one set of chromosomes from Musa acuminata and two from Musa balbisiana.

Musa acuminata is better known as Cavendish banana or any variety related to Cavendish. This is a kind of dessert banana. Musa balbisiana is the most commonly used species for the manufacture of bananas, such as plantains. So it’s interesting to note that such a gooey and rich dessert banana turned out to be from this stock!

The Javanese blue banana really has a delicious dessert flavor, thanks to Musa acuminata, which is part of the ABB Group range. It is often called banana ice cream because it looks like ice cream. It is known to taste like vanilla custard and is definitely worth a try!

The “Blue Java” bananas grow, like all bananas, from rhizomatous corms. This base extends about 18 inches into the ground before the roots form. The rhizome forms a main stem, called a false stem, which forms the ”trunk“ of the banana ”tree”. This stem is actually a cylinder of tight banana leaves that grow directly from a Corm.

When the Blue Java banana is on the fruit, a thick stem, called the real stem, moves away from it. It grows through the center of the main stem, then comes out outward, hanging on one side. It is on this real stem that a large flower will develop. Each petal gradually flakes off and forms a shadow for the small collection of banana flowers below.

This is what ends up becoming a fruit. Growing up, these are blue bananas that look very beautiful on the plant. Each handful of frozen bananas will form under its petal until the petals no longer open. At this point, the remaining flower can be cut off so that the plant can concentrate on its fruits.

A banana ice cream plant can take 15 to 24 months after planting to launch its first main stem. In addition to the Blue Java plant, more branches or “puppies” are formed from the corms. Once the fruit has turned yellow and ripened, the false peduncle can be cut into corms and one of these new shoots can give the next growth spurt.

Although there are many species of dwarf bananas, this one is not one of them. In California, they average 12 to 15 feet tall and can reach a height of 20 feet in tropical regions.

Caring for Javanese blue bananas

Caring for them is quite simple if you prepare the soil correctly. Read on to find out which conditions are best for your plant!

Water and humidity

All bananas love water. In these tropics, you will be thirsty! However, they do not tolerate stagnant water. Make sure that your soil is well drained and that it does not accumulate around the plant during the rain. If desired, wrap a soaking hose around the base and let it soak long and deeply.

Water abundantly every day or every other day. In the summer, it will probably be daily watering. The rest of the year, avoid watering if it rains a lot and water every other day if there has been no rain.

Like most tropical plants, your Blue Java needs ambient humidity. Although it can survive lower humidity levels, a humidity level of 50% is practically ideal.

Universe

Good drainage is necessary for the cultivation of bananas, especially blue Java. Like most other banana trees, its root system is sensitive to fungal pathogens such as pythium, which cause redness of the roots. It is also susceptible to fusarium wilt. Both of these species tend to thrive in soil that is too moist, so make sure it drains well.

Whenever possible, start with a sterile soil mixture to avoid fusariosis. If this is not possible, consider solarizing the soil several months before planting to reduce the risks.

If you are preparing the pot mixture yourself, try to make it so that about 20% of it consists of perlite or other drainage additives. Use coconut, peat moss or even sawdust to retain water. Good quality compost is another excellent ingredient. If you are adding soil, try using loamy or sandy soil rather than clay.

Blue Java bananas prefer the soil pH to be between 5.5 and 7.0. Best of all, they will grow in the range from neutral to slightly acidic.

Fertilization

Try to use phosphorus-rich fertilizers for initial growth. An 8-10-8 ratio or a balanced 10-10-10 will do. Young plants should be slightly diluted, about 65-75%. If you are using a granular fertilizer, simply apply a little less to the young banana than to the old one.

When the tree is old enough to bear fruit, replace it with a potassium-rich fertilizer when it begins to form a real stem. Aim for 10-10-15 or 10-10-20. This will promote fruiting.
